Octopus in Drag

2024

“Octopus in Drag” is an experimental animation featuring a hybrid monster—a feline-rat-octopus that writhes within a white porcelain bathroom. Through a fusion of Voguing and Crip Walk dance movements, the creature tears open the scars of racial and queer identity.
As the octopus’s flesh flows and transforms, the bathroom gradually collapses, together shattering fixed categories and normative violence. The work appropriates Asian historical imagery and drag aesthetics, turning stereotypes back upon themselves while injecting toxicity through elements of urine, smoke, and cheap silver glitter.
The animation cultivates chrysanthemums blooming from the bathroom ruins—representing not destruction but toxic rebirth. Ultimately, binary oppositions corrode and dissolve, allowing strange new modes of existence to emerge from the ground.
