"Octopus in Drag" is an experimental animation centering on a hybrid creature - a feline-looking octopus performing in a white porcelain bathroom. Through dance movements combining voguing and crip walk, accompanied by sounds collected from Chinatown, the piece explores themes of racial and queer identity. The octopus's fluid transformations and the bathroom's gradual collapse challenge fixed categories and normative structures.
Drawing from historical Asian representations and drag aesthetics, the work reclaims stereotypical imagery while incorporating elements of toxicity through urine, smoke, and silver tinsels. The animation culminates in the bathroom's destruction and unexpected chrysanthemum blooming, suggesting transformation and renewal rather than mere devastation. The piece ultimately envisions a space where binary categories dissolve and new forms of being become possible.
