Octopus in Drag is an experimental animation centered on a hybrid creature—a feline-rat-octopus writhing inside a white porcelain bathroom. The setting is not neutral: the tiled surface, cold and pristine, becomes an antagonist. Its clinical sterility imposes a regime of cleanliness, containment, and normativity. Against it, the creature leaks, spasms, and mutates—its flesh refusing containment, its gestures borrowed from voguing and Crip Walk, movements not for display but for breach.
This confrontation intensifies as the creature’s form splinters. The bathroom’s grid cracks. Bodies and walls collapse in sync. The logic of hygiene is violated—urine seeps, glitter contaminates, smoke curls into corners once meant for purity. Asian visual motifs—once ornamental—are dragged into decay, corrupted rather than framed.
From this detritus, chrysanthemums bloom—not as sacred symbols, but as spores of toxic rebirth. The work does not seek restoration. Its climax is rot: the collapse of binary orders, the slow birth of something uncontained and illegible. In this space, monstrosity is not punished—it is allowed to flower.
