I work with found images, inexpensive objects, damaged surfaces, writing, and gestures that persist beyond their original use. Translation, for me, is a bodily process: accent, breath, copying, mistranslation, and mishearing reveal what changes as something passes from one person, language, or medium to another. I am interested in repetition, distortion, and the ways time moves through bodies, materials, and language. photographs made along the urban fringes of Chengdu. The project focuses on surfaces, objects, and improvised structures that gather where different systems overlap without fully synchronizing. The work unfolds across two publications, Now and Elsewhere, alongside a photographic installation. Now attends to weathered and provisional forms: rust, faded fabric, weeds, dust, spiderwebs, and thresholds caught between use, neglect, and redevelopment. Elsewhere turns toward neon afterimages, LED surfaces, decorative structures, and staged environments associated with progress and aspiration. Ruin and futurity do not appear here as opposites. They occupy the same terrain. fringes of Chengdu and to the two-yuan shops still surviving there. Cheap toys, tools, containers, seasonal decorations, and other disposable goods were bought, taken back to the studio, and repeatedly stacked, tied, dismantled, and rebuilt into temporary structures. I photographed each arrangement on large-format film with flash just before it collapsed. The title comes from the stray dogs I kept encountering in the same neighborhoods. Like the shops and the objects they sell, they persist within spaces the city has not yet fully absorbed or cleared away. The structures remain precarious by design. The project centers on "Jonathan," a fictional artist constructed as an unstable online proxy. Through correspondence, images, fictional documents, and contributions from lovers, anonymous users, activists, and silent visitors, the website gradually became a shifting archive in which authorship and identity continually changed hands. Jonathan never settles into a coherent person. He remains a broken relay: part fiction, part projection, part collective body. The project treats art-making not as a resolution of fear, but as a way of remaining with it.
