“Sailor” consists of three volumes, introduced by the exotic landscapes and vibrant colors of ”Eden”, the first, and “The Orchid Man”, the second, with a concentrated mix of images from various sources. The third volume, ”WishList”, takes its inspiration from homosexual pornographic magazines, fetishistically preserving the low-fidelity effects of the magazine images and the reflective sheen of the original photographs, respectively.
I try to discuss how queer culture in Shanghai is configured within debates of cosmopolitanism and urban politics and the platitudes, sexual stereotypes, the construction of masculinity, and its commodification processes therein. Moreover, it reveals how these different identities and spaces are lived and experienced by ordinary people and the possible ways of resisting the dominant narratives.
